Am I eligible to give blood?

Your eligibility to give blood is based on criteria from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA’s guidelines are followed by all blood centers nationwide and your eligibility will be determined by factors such as age, travel, lifestyle and medications.

To Donate blood or platelets, you must be:

  • At least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 lbs. and bring a signed consent form

  • At least 17 years old, and weigh at least 110 lbs.

  • Present a valid photo ID

  • Generally be in good health

Will my medication prevent me from donating?

Certain medications and medical conditions will prevent you from donating, at least temporarily. To inquire about your specific medical conditions or medications, please call (629) 736-2320

    • Accutane

    • Antibiotics *Donors who are taking antibiotics are eligible to donate 24 hours after their last dose.

    • Anti-Platelet Medications

    • Avodart

    • Blood thinners (such as Coumadin, Heparin, Lovenox, Warfarin)

    • Bovine insulin

    • Hepatitis B Immune Globulin

    • Human-derived growth hormones

    • Jalyn

    • Propecia

    • Proscar

    • Soriatane

    • Tegison

    • Unlicensed vaccines (usually associated with research)

How long will the donation take?

Blood donations can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on donation type. Visit our Donation Types tab to select the donation you are interested in to learn more!
